The USPGA Golf Championship History

Played in the US since 1916, the US PGA Championship is an elite level event that takes place on the third weekend in August. The event was the first one organised by the newly formed Professional Golfers Association of America (PGA) and when Jim Barnes collected the winner's medal, he was awarded a cash prize worth $500.

Early versions of the US PGA Championship were played at varying times between May and December. However, following World War II and the backlash against the match play structure of the tournament (which could see players playing 200 holes in a day), the format was changed in 1958 and the date set to August.

Changing the tournament to a stroke play format helped to increase the popularity of the event and, today, the top players compete for a $10 million prize in front of an international audience.
