Copa Del Rey History

Formed in 1903, the Copa del Rey was effectively Spain's national football championship until the foundation of the Campeonato de Liga in 1928. Back then, teams would qualify for the tournament via their regional leagues, with only a select few champions being permitted to enter the cup.

After a national league was established in Spain, the tournament expanded significantly to include more teams. Today, the Copa del Rey typically features 82 teams from the Primera, Segunda A and Segunda B divisions of Spanish football along with the winner of the Tercera Division.

Though the format has been tinkered with many times over the years – with a league format briefly trialled at one stage – in its modern day incarnation, the Copa del Rey's early rounds are all one-off games in which the lower division team is given home advantage. The ties become two-legged affairs from the round of 32 onwards, with the final reverting to a one-off game at a neutral venue.
