Willie Mullins reached the milestone of training 100 winners at the Cheltenham Festival in March 2023, further cementing his place as one of horse racing's greatest ever trainers, but how much is the Carlow-based handler worth overall?

Mullins and wife Jackie jointly own Closutton Equine Ltd, whose principal activity is bloodstock trading.

The business of trading racehorses is a major source of income for many trainers and Willie and Jackie’s most recent high profile sale was Lope De Lilas to Wathnan Racing.

According to the annual accounts submitted to CRO (Companies Registration Office), the company made a profit before tax of €292,170 in 2022 and reported net assets of €1.66m, including €334,450 in cash.

Prize Money

Willie Mullins’ net worth is estimated to be over the 20 million mark, although it is difficult to calculate the exact numbers given that his investments, assets, training fees and endorsements etc, vary from year to year.

His prize money statistics for the past five years are very interesting, and moreover are very lucrative:

  • IRE NH: €25,853,510

  • GB NH: £7,651,192

  • IRE Flat: €900,440

  • GB Flat: £914,119

His total prize money over the past five years totals £35,319,261 in Britain and Ireland combined, and given that a trainer takes roughly a 10% share of any winnings, Mullins derives a sizeable pay cheque from this arm of his estate.

According to Business Plus Magazine (Ireland) since 2007, Mullins' horses have won some €74.5m over Irish jumps and a further €4.5m in flat races for a total of approximately €79m.

Since 1991, horses trained by Mullins have won £19.3m in jump races in Britain, and further £2.8m in flat races, for a total of around £22.1m, meaning Mullins' horses have won approximately €105m over the past 33 years.

Understandably Mullins’ horses are always very popular with bettors in the sports betting markets too.
