Tiffany & Co have been making the Vince Lombardi Trophy since 1967
The Vince Lombardi Trophy is awarded to the winning team at the Super Bowl each year, with a new trophy created by Tiffany & Co ahead of the NFL showpiece contest.
Named after the late Vince Lombardi before Super Bowl V, the trophy is a regulation-sized silver football that is mounted in a kicking position on a pyramid stand.
Vince Lombardi Trophy Guide:
Standing at 22 inches tall and weighing 3 kg, the Vince Lombardi Trophy is a spectacular sight and it is one of the most recognisable awards in all of sport.
If you’re into American football odds and NFL betting, you’ll know all about the Super Bowl but how much do you know about the Vince Lombardi Trophy?
Hopefully after reading this, your Super Bowl trophy knowledge will be significantly greater than before. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s get down to business!
Vince Lombardi Trophy Design:
The Vince Lombardi Trophy is unique in shape and size – and there is an interesting story as to how the award was designed.
Back in 1966, NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle made the decision to find a trophy for the first ever AFL-NFL Championship contest.
For some reason, Rozelle got in touch with Tiffany & Co. The famous jewellery store was certainly an odd choice to say the least...
They brought in their chief designer who, with limited football knowledge, bought a football and he came up with a design involving a finished box of Cornflakes.
Tiffany’s took the idea to Rozelle, with Riedener allegedly drawing a sketch of the design on a cocktail napkin.
The NFL Commissioner was obviously impressed as the design was sanctioned and the Super Bowl trophy is still based on the original Lombardi Trophy 55 years later.
How Is The Vince Lombardi Trophy Made?
Punters will be well aware of Super Bowl betting markets but do you know how the Vince Lombardi Trophy is created?
According to various sources, it takes Tiffany & Co around four months to mould, shape and then carve the sterling silver trophy. It certainly cannot be done overnight…
Created in their workshop, expert silversmiths and metal spinners use four distinct techniques to make the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
Hand soldering, spinning, chasing and polishing the metal are crucial components of the trophy-making process, with the sterling silver melted at over 500 degrees Celsius in order to shape the award.
Vince Lombardi Trophy Worth:
While estimates value the Vince Lombardi Trophy at around $10,000, the actual value of the silver used to create the trophy is around $2,900.
After the Super Bowl trophy presentation is complete, the winning team send the trophy back to Tiffany & Co who then clean and engrave the award each year.
The Vince Lombardi Trophy value is then worthless to other teams but is the greatest award in sport for the winning franchise – you don’t need to be an NFL betting tips expert to know that.
