Thomas Tuchel is one of the best football managers of his generation. Having led teams near the top of the Premier League betting, Bundesliga betting, and Ligue 1 betting markets, Tuchel is trying his hand at national management with England.
He was announced as Gareth Southgate’s successor in October 2024.

Tuchel comes with a reputation as a knockout competition specialist, often performing better in cup competitions than in the league. He won the Champions League with Chelsea and led PSG to the final in 2020.
Conflict is a large part of the Tuchel story, though. There has been tension with his bosses at some point during most of his managerial stops, meaning he hasn’t spent three years at a club since leaving Mainz in 2014.

Thomas Tuchel’s net worth is thought to be in the region of £20 million. The former Chelsea manager has worked at some of the biggest football clubs, so it’s no surprise he’s amassed a fortune comparable with many of the elite managers and coaches to feature in sports betting.
Tuchel reportedly received a sizeable payout from Chelsea. Similar will have happened when he left PSG in December 2020.
Unlike players, managers do not receive significant income from endorsement deals. According to the Mirror, Thomas Tuchel will be on £5 million per year as England manager.
This represents a massive decrease from his reported £10 million salary when he was Chelsea manager, which ranked him among the highest-paid football managers in the world.
This salary would place joint-sixth among Premier League managers alongside Sean Dyche and Ange Postecoglou.
Pep Guardiola is the highest earner in the Premier League at £20 million per year, putting him ahead of Mikel Arteta and Unai Emery.
Reporting on how much Gareth Southgate earned as England manager varies considerably.
Some outlets claim Tuchel’s salary is very similar to what Southgate was on, while the Mirror believe Southgate was on roughly £2.5 million per year before bonuses.

Appointed as England manager in October 2024, Thomas Tuchel is looking to build on the Three Lions’ most successful period.
Two of their three major finals came under Gareth Southgate’s leadership, and the pressure is on ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Tuchel has a supremely talented squad at his disposal, led by Harry Kane, who is likely entering his last major tournament at his peak.
Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka, Cole Palmer, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Kobbie Mainoo make up an extremely talented core.
At Tuchel’s introductory press conference, FA Chief Mark Bullingham said, “This is a really exciting day for the English game. We’ve appointed one of the very best coaches in the world.
“Our aim is always to win a major tournament and we believe Thomas gives us the best possible chance to do that at the next men’s World Cup.”
A proven winner across Europe’s top leagues, Tuchel is well aware of the enormity of the task, but his ambition during his first media commitments as England manager was notable.
The former PSG manager said, “To be part of this federation with such a strong record in the last tournaments to push it over the line and to try to put a second star on the shirt.”
There were predictable comments about Tuchel’s nationality, but he dealt with those pretty emphatically.
“I'm sorry, I just have a German passport but the supporters felt my passion for the English Premier League, my passion for the country, how I love to live here.
“Hopefully, I can convince them and show them and prove them that I'm proud to be the English manager, I will do everything to show respect to this role and to this country and the target for the next 18 months is nothing else.
“Everyone can be assured that we will do it with passion and with emotions and we will try to install values and principles and rules as quickly as possible to make the dream come true.”
Agreeing to only an 18-month contract leaves room for either party to escape if this doesn’t go as hoped, but Tuchel noted that 18-month stints have worked well for him in the past (a Champions League win at Chelsea being a good example).
Style of Play
Renowned as one of the sport’s leading tacticians, Thomas Tuchel’s flexibility is his identifying characteristic.
Where other managers are wedded to a philosophy, Tuchel is adaptable. He preferred a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 during his time in Paris and Dortmund but leaned heavily on a back three as Chelsea manager.
Whatever the shape, Tuchel’s teams are focused on winning the middle of the pitch.
There are several players close to the main forward (Harry Kane, in England’s case), and there is an immediate, organised press whenever possession is lost.
His teams are structured, keeping them protected against counterattacks. During his time at Chelsea, the Blues were only behind Manchester City in the key defensive metrics.
The football was not always scintillating – the possession style was too risk-averse at times, but his side were capable of transitioning quickly when the situation dictated.
Tuchel’s success in cup football shows how well his approach works against highly talented opponents. England fans will be hoping he can navigate the big matches which saw Gareth Southgate fall short of silverware.
The Three Lions had their issues against low blocks too, though, and Tuchel’s Bayern had plenty of slip ups in such matches.
It may take some time for Tuchel to adjust to international management, but his preference for narrow attacking setups inevitably favours Cole Palmer and Phil Foden over Bukayo Saka and Anthony Gordon.
