Chelsea FC - 2019/20 Squad

Heading into the 2019/20 season, Chelsea’s squad is solid, but there is a fair bit of uncertainty with a transfer ban looming and a new manager arriving.

There’s talent there, though, from star midfielder N’Golo Kante to teenage sensation Callum Hudson-Odoi and England international Ruben Loftus-Cheek. The latter pair are both recovering from Achilles injuries, however.

David Luiz, Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger are good options at the heart of defence, while Cesar Azpilicueta remains a solid right-back.

The Blues have a huge number of players out on loan, several of which could return to Stamford Bridge as part of the first-team squad next season.

In the summer transfer window, Belgian superstar Eden Hazard was sold to Real Madrid for around £100 million after seven brilliant years at the club.

Who Were Chelsea's Top Scorers Last Season?

1. Eden Hazard – 21 goals

T-2. Pedro – 13 goals

T-2. Olivier Giroud – 13 goals

4. Ruben Loftus-Cheek – 10 goals

Who Owns Chelsea Football Club?

Chelsea are owned by Roman Abramovich, who took over the club from Ken Bates in 2003.

What Are Chelsea's Biggest Rivalries?

Chelsea have several London rivals. Arsenal and Chelsea have been close competitors on the pitch for much of the last two decades.

Matches against Tottenham are always a fiery occasion, and the contests have become more relevant in recent seasons as the teams have become more directly competitive in the league.

West Ham, Millwall and Chelsea’s fans have a messy history, but those issues are largely in the past. Fulham, whose ground is just down the road from Stamford Bridge, are rivals strictly in a geographical sense.

Some epic clashes with Liverpool in the mid-2000s saw the growth of a rivalry between the two clubs as Jose Mourinho and Rafael Benitez dueled countless times. The Steven Gerrard slip up was another famous chapter in the two clubs’ battles.

Rivalries with teams from abroad are rare. Chelsea and Barcelona have developed something close to that, however, thanks to many high-profile European encounters.

What Are Chelsea's Highest Player Salaries? How Much Is The Club Worth?

Chelsea’s wage bill for the 2018/19 season stood at £125.4 million, per Spotrac.

Whether that figure increases or decreases before the start of 2019/20 will depend on Chelsea’s transfer ban, though Hazard’s departure saves them a significant amount of money per week.

Forbes value Chelsea at roughly $2.6 billion, putting them as the sixth most valuable club in the world behind fifth-placed Manchester City but ahead of Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs.

Nike have manufactured Chelsea’s kit since the 2017/18 season on a deal that is worth £900 million over 15 seasons.

Chelsea's Most Memorable Moments & Greatest Achievements

Much of Chelsea’s success has come since Roman Abramovich bought the club in 2003. The Blues won their first league title in 50 years in 2004/05 and followed it up with the third in the club’s history in 2005/06.

Carlo Ancelotti brought free-flowing attacking football to west London in the 2009/10 campaign, guiding Chelsea to their first ever double.

Two years later, with a veteran team, Chelsea had the greatest moment in their history in Munich as they defeated Bayern to lift the Champions League.

Didier Drogba scored a stunning late header to send the game to extra time before sealing the trophy with the fifth penalty in the shootout. Two more league titles and two Europa League trophies have followed since.

Chelsea Fan Profile

Chelsea’s fan base has increased in this century thanks to the success and cash-splashing of the Abramovich era. The traditional support remains, but the issues with football hooliganism in the 1970s, 80s and 90s have declined dramatically.

The Shed End is the home of Chelsea’s loudest fans, where you will regularly hear one of their main chants, ‘Carefree’.

Suggs, Madness’ lead singer, is a diehard Chelsea fan and Madness’ song ‘One Step Beyond’ is often played at Stamford Bridge. Other famous Chelsea fans include former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen and presenter Jeremy Clarkson.

Stamford Bridge, London

Stamford Bridge has been Chelsea’s home stadium since they were founded in 1905, but the ground itself was opened in 1877.

Chelsea have been planning to expand the stadium (or move elsewhere) for several seasons as the current capacity of just under 41,000 is not considered sufficient for a club of their size.

The current plan is for the stadium to be expanded to 63,000 capacity by the 2023/24 campaign.

Famous Chelsea Legends

As you go back through Chelsea’s history, there are several names that stand out, such as Jimmy Greaves, Roy Bentley, Ron Harris and Peter Osgood.

Chelsea had some big names at the club in the late 1990s and early 2000s before the injection of Roman Abramovich’s cash, including Gianluca Vialli, Ruud Gullit and Mark Hughes. Of course, Gianfranco Zola was the most popular of all.

In the Abramovich era, the core of Petr Cech, John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba will go down as four of the greatest players to play for the club.

Recently sold forward Eden Hazard will join that group, as will current midfielder N’Golo Kante. Champions League winning manager and former midfielder Roberto di Matteo deserves a mention to, as do fan favourites Dennis Wise and Joe Cole.
