NFL Week 17 Predictions & Tips
-
Only two weeks remain in the NFL, and yet, there’s plenty to play for.
-
The NFC South and NFC West are yet to crown a champion.
-
One playoff place remains in the AFC, which presently looks to go to either the Chargers or Broncos.
The games have come thick and fast over these last few weeks in the NFL, with this week spreading back to a two-game showdown on Xmas Day.
Point Spread - Buffalo Bills (-6.5)
Point Spread - Indianapolis Colts (-7.5)
Point Spread - Cleveland Browns (6.5)
To the time of writing, three games have already taken place in Week 17, with three more taking place through Saturday, 28 December, before all of the other teams pile in for the more commonplace Sunday-Monday slate.
For these NFL Week 17 picks, the focus is on the games starting on Sunday or later.
New York Jets at Buffalo Bills
At 4-11, it’s another lost season for the New York Jets, and this year, it’s without the excuse of their star quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, being out injured. Last week, they lost 19-9 to the Los Angeles Rams at home.
For 2024, they’ve powered up the offence and still failed to impress, but there may be cause to celebrate in Week 17 if Rodgers throws his 500th career touchdown pass, which Davante Adams seems keen to receive.
On the other side of the ball in this one will be a red-hot Josh Allen, who most recently steered his Buffalo Bills to a closer-than-expected win over the New England Patriots 24-21.
Allen’s efforts throughout the 2024 season have earned him the most buzz for the MVP title, especially with insiders now apparently revealing that he’s been playing with a fractured left hand.
On a two-game win streak and undefeated in the AFC East, this looks to be another Bills win in the making, settling the Week 17 picks in the NFL betting on the Bills to win and both Allen and Cook to score anytime touchdowns.
Indianapolis Colts at New York Giants
There is a chance that, in the context of the AFC South, the Indianapolis Colts could emerge with a rather good campaign in the books, being only two wins back of the flailing 9-7 Houston Texans.
Last week, they brute-forced their way to a 38-30 win, letting the ground game do almost all of the damage. Anthony Richardson was excellent when rushing, as was star back Jonathan Taylor, but the QB still managed to throw for one INT and one TD from seven completions on 11 attempts.
While there is still pride in and amongst the roster, the New York Giants continue to dig themselves towards a franchise-worst season. Most recently, the ’24 Giants logged a record tenth consecutive loss.
A 34-7 demolition job put on by the Atlanta Falcons affirmed Big Blue as the frontrunners for the first overall pick, and given that they have one of the worst run defences and only three interceptions all season, Week 17 might be much of the same.
The Colts should see this as a golden opportunity to go to 8-8 and charge through Big Blue. Assuming this will be the case, the NFL picks here go to Indy at -7.5 on the spread and Taylor to score 2+ touchdowns.
Miami Dolphins at Cleveland Browns
It’s an incredibly slim chance prior to the Saturday slate of Week 17, but the Miami Dolphins are still technically in the hunt for a playoff spot.
Adding another win to the column to move 7-8, the Dolphins walked through the San Francisco 49ers 29-17 at home. De’Von Achane was particularly effective in this one, putting up 180 scrimmage yards and a touchdown to be the team’s lead rusher and receiver.
There isn’t any hiding the disaster that is the Cleveland Browns organisation once again. Bar the obvious Hall of Famer on defence, it’s a mess. Last week’s 24-6 loss to the Bengals made it four on the bounce to sit 3-12.
On their third starting QB of the campaign, Dorian Thompson-Robinson couldn’t muster a touchdown pass, did manage to stack a fair few rushing yards, but with the game slipping, threw interceptions on successive drives.
The Fins are heavily favoured in the odds, but the Browns still pack a punch on defence, and Miami are notoriously bad in the colder climates. So, it’d be worth watching the live betting lines once we see how they cope with the weather.
The Week 17 NFL picks in this one, then, actually side with the Browns on the spread at +6.5 and there being under 37.5 total points.
