Bayer Leverkusen Club History
Five times runners up in Bundesliga betting and a finalist in Champions League outright odds earlier this century, Bayer Leverkusen have been a bridesmaid for much of their history with just a small collection of major trophies to their name.
Initially founded in 1904 by the employees of a pharmaceutical company, Bayer Leverkusen were not a powerhouse of German football throughout the decades following the Second World War.
There was a brief Oberliga stint in the 1950s, but Leverkusen were largely a second-tier club prior to their Bundesliga promotion in 1979. They even had a couple of seasons in the Verbandsliga in the mid-1970s.
Once the club, in its iconic red and black, arrived in the Bundesliga, they made themselves at home.
Leverkusen have not dropped outside the topflight since earning promotion, and after taking a few seasons to consolidate as a Bundesliga outfit, they had 10 consecutive seasons in the top eight between the mid-1980s and mid-1990s.

Winners of the UEFA Cup towards the beginning of that period, Leverkusen became a staple of continental competition, and lifted their lone DFB-Pokal in 1992-93.
Another strong spell came either side of the turn of the century, with four second place finishes in the Bundesliga in a six-year span.
This also featured their only Champions League final appearance, which ended in a loss to Real Madrid.
Aside from 2002-03 and 2016-17, Leverkusen have finished in the top half in every Bundesliga season since 1996.
There has been only four seasons this millennium where Leverkusen have not competed in the UEFA Cup/Europa League or Champions League.
Rüdiger Vollborn is the club’s all-time leading appearance maker with 483. Only two players have scored more than 91 goals for the club -- Stefan Kießling (162) and Ulf Kirsten (220).
Over the years, Leverkusen has been home to some true world stars, including Michael Ballack, Toni Kroos, and Heung-min Son.

Bayer Leverkusen Competitions This Season
Bayer Leverkusen started the season with the grind of the Bundesliga, the cup hope of the DFB-Pokal and the glitz of the Champions League to concern themselves with.
Drawn with Atletico Madrid, Porto and Club Brugge, their Champions League journey ended after just six matches after accumulating a mere five points.
That's how many points we want to get on Sunday! 💪⚫️🔴

The fallout from that elimination is a Europa League knockout playoff tie with Monaco in February.
Back in July, Leverkusen’s hopes of winning just a second DFB-Pokal in their history vanished when they fell to 3. Liga outfit Sportvereinigung 07 Elversberg e.V.
Runners up in the competition in 2019-20, it was one of the biggest shocks of the season in German football.
Leverkusen’s Bundesliga campaign began with a loss to Borussia Dortmund, followed by a pair of defeats to Augsburg and Hoffenheim. It took until 6th November for their third league win of the season.
