Despite falling short in Champions League outright odds, Atletico Madrid have a lot to play for in the 2022—23 season.

How will the club fare domestically? Are you backing Atleti for silverware in 2023?

Atletico Madrid Club History

One of the most recognisable names to those who regularly bet on football, Atletico Madrid have been overshadowed by their city rivals Real throughout history, but that does not detract from what a successful they have been dating all the way back to the start of the 20th century.

Only Barcelona and Real can better Atletico’s tally of 11 league titles. The same goes for runners up finishes.

In the Copa del Rey, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao are the only teams with more wins than Atletico, and their record of three UEFA Cup/Europa League wins is joint-second most with Inter, Liverpool and Juventus.

Atleti are also three-time European Cup/Champions League finalists, losing to Bayern in 1973-74, and losing twice to Real in the 2010s.

Since the Spanish Civil War, Atletico have spent just two seasons outside La Liga. Relegated to the Segunda Division in 2000, the club finished fourth in its first season in the second tier and topped the division in the following campaign.

Atletico Madrid previews

It took a few seasons for Atletico to become a force near the top of Spanish football again after their relegation, but they finished fourth in 2007-08, and have not placed lower than third since 2012-13.

Eight players have won the Pichichi Trophy representing Los Colchoneros, including Diego Forlan Hugo Sanchez.

Seven Atletico players have been awarded the Zamora Trophy, with Thibaut Courtois and Jan Oblak each receiving the honour on multiple occasions.

Winner of three league titles and five times a champion in the Copa del Rey, Adelardo Rodríguez is Atletico’s all-time appearance leader, though he is at risk of being overtaken by Koke.

Former Spain manager Luis Aragonés is the club’s all-time leading scorer.

Atletico Madrid Competitions This Season

Atletico Madrid are, as ever, one of the strongest teams in La Liga odds. Their focus in 2023 is entirely on domestic action, which is a rarity for a club of their stature.

The first half of the campaign didn’t go as planned for Diego Simeone’s team.

Off the pace set by Real Madrid and Barcelona in La Liga, Atletico were bottom of their Champions League group after winning just one match from a section with Porto, Bayer Leverkusen and Club Brugge.

Finishing fourth eliminated them from European football altogether.

Wins over Almazan, Arenteiro and Oviedo have kept their Copa del Rey campaign alive. Atletico will be eyeing a deep cup run to compensate for their premature continental exit.

The standout remaining La Liga fixture is the Madrid derby in late February. Atleti’s season ends on 4th June with an away match against Villarreal.
