Two stalwarts at the top of Serie A odds, Juventus and Napoli are two of the best supported clubs in Italy.

Any fixture between the two is going to attract fans all over the world towards online betting. The atmosphere is always intense, and the football usually delivers at a high standard. Let’s take a deeper look at this fierce rivalry…

Juventus vs Napoli Rivalry

Tension between Juventus and Napoli has always existed. It’s a natural result of regional rivalry between the north and south. Turin and Naples are two of the bigger cities in the country, and major economic hubs.

On the pitch, though, it only really took off in the 1980s. This was when the club from Naples could really challenge Juventus on a consistent basis.

Inspired by the incomparable Diego Maradona, Napoli were challenging in the mid-80s, and won their first ever title in 1986. Representing southern Italy, toppling the powers from the north was a seminal moment.

Their first and only meeting in continental competition followed in 1989. Napoli progressed, and ultimately lifted the UEFA Cup. Just a few months later, they won their second Scudetto.

Hitting hard times with relegation and bankruptcy in the late 1990s, Napoli were sent down to Serie C1.

As they worked they way back to the big time, they met Juventus, who were recovering from Calciopoli. The clubs earned promotion back to Serie A in the same season.

This duel has intensified further despite Juventus’ string of titles in recent years. Napoli have been a constant contender, and the sale of Gonzalo Higuain only heightened the ill-feeling between the two clubs.

The Argentine’s jerseys were burned on the streets of Naples when he signed for Juventus in 2016.

Juventus vs Napoli Head To Head

It’s a hefty advantage for Juventus in the head-to-head with Napoli. While Napoli have enjoyed some success of late, there have been lengthy periods of Juventus dominance throughout this rivalry.

From 1974 to 1978, for instance, Juventus were unbeaten against Napoli, and only failed to win once in that span. There were a couple of heavy wins in Juventus’ favour then, too, with a 4-1 and a 6-2.

Following that run, there was a dreary period from 1978 to 1985. Of the 13 matches in this window, 12 of them had two or fewer goals. Six scoreless draws were included in that tally.

Napoli had a good spell in the late-80s, winning nine of 13, and knocking Juventus out of the UEFA Cup at the quarter-finals in 1989. Things quickly swung back in Juve’s favour, however, with a whopping 23-match unbeaten streak against Gli Azzurri.

This head-to-head has provided eras of captivating football. It has also had lengthy spells where it has been a mismatch, and that has more often than not been in Juventus’ direction.

The result is a one-sided all-time record between the two, with Juventus scoring 70 more goals in the matchups.

Such a trend carries over to the trophy tallies. Juventus have a combined 50 Scudetti and Coppa Italias. Napoli have just eight.

While Juventus haven’t always enjoyed as much European success as they’d hope for, they are miles clear of Napoli in that department.

The Old Lady has two Champions League wins and three UEFA Cups. Napoli’s only European silverware was their Diego Mardona-led UEFA Cup glory in 1989 (the year they beat Juventus).

Juventus vs Napoli Serie A Results

The Juventus vs Napoli Serie A results follow the pattern of the overall record. Juventus have won over double as many matches against Napoli as vice-versa. There’s a chasm between them in goal scoring, too.

As 36-time Italian champions, and often home to the Serie A top scorers, there’s no surprise in Juventus having the upper hand. Given Napoli’s standing, though, it might shock some people to see such a gap between the two clubs when it comes to Serie A results.

While Napoli haven’t fallen below seventh since 2010, they have endured several spells as Serie A also-rans. Aside from the peak Diego Maradona years, Napoli were a mid-table club through most of the 1980s and 1990s.

As Juventus won five titles between 1950 and 1961, Napoli never finished higher than fourth in that period. Napoli have only finished higher than Juve in 11 seasons. That number is at 64 for the Old Lady.
