As a rivalry, this might not carry the same cachet as some of Italy’s other historic duels. Its relevance has fluctuated over the decades, but with their title battles in the 1980s and some enthralling contests in recent years, Napoli and Inter are familiar foes.

Napoli vs Inter Rivalry
The rivalry between Napoli and Inter is built on the foundation of a north versus south tension which stretches beyond football.
Napoli have often been the representatives of Southern Italy, looking to challenge the established, all-conquering powers from the north of the country.
The Milan clubs and Juventus have long been the dominant forces in Italian football. Napoli put up the most sustained challenge to the status quo thanks to Diego Maradona.
Winning two league titles in the 1980s, and competing for several others, Maradona put the club on the map. In doing so, he provoked a rivalry between Inter and Napoli.
Along with Milan and Juventus, Inter and Napoli were going toe-to-toe for the Scudetto in successive seasons. Inter were third when Napoli won in 1990 and 1987. Napoli were Inter’s nearest challengers in their triumphant 1988/89 season.
While this period was the pinnacle of Inter and Napoli’s rivalry, they already had plenty of history. A decade earlier, they met in the Coppa Italia final, when an 89th goal from Graziano Bini broke Neapolitan hearts.
Knockout football has provided more recent drama, too, with a tense meeting between the two in the semi-finals of the 2019/20 Coppa Italia.
Napoli were victors on that occasion, and went on to beat Juventus on penalties in the final to lift the trophy for a sixth time.

There aren’t many measures which come out in Napoli’s favour in their head-to-head with Inter. The club from Milan have 19 league titles. Napoli have just two.
Inter have a narrower advantage in the Coppa Italia stakes (seven wins to Napoli’s six). Inter are three-time European champions and three-time UEFA Cup winners. Napoli’s only European hardware was the UEFA Cup in their glorious Diego Maradona era.
Taking the silverware into account, it’s hardly surprising that Inter have a considerable lead in the head-to-head record in all competitions.
Long favoured in Serie A predictions, Inter have enjoyed the upper hand for long periods of this rivalry.
Napoli have suffered numerous relegations throughout their history. Inter have been a permanent fixture in Serie A since its first season as a round-robin tournament in 1929.

It’s advantage Inter in the Serie A results. While European football tips have had little to choose between the two clubs in recent seasons, Inter have historically dominated this matchup with 68 wins to Napoli’s 46.
Napoli’s last league win against Inter was a 4-1 victory in 2018/19. They have played Nerazzuri relatively even over the last few seasons, but this hasn’t always been the case.
