NFL Picks Straight Up Week 5

  • Only the Kansas City Chiefs and Minnesota Vikings remain undefeated entering Week 5.

  • At 0-4, the Jacksonville Jaguars are the final team to be winless in the NFL.

  • In the net points column, the Vikings and New Orleans Saints lead the way by some margin at +57.

As the NFL’s Week 5 rolls in, a handful of teams are given time off, with the Detroit Lions, Los Angeles Chargers, Philadelphia Eagles, and Tennessee Titans going on their byes.

Quite surprisingly, given the preseason reports, the Minnesota Vikings sit atop many power rankings now. They’ve gone 4-0, and while the Kansas City Chiefs are also undefeated, they’ve sustained another major injury.

With Week 5 upon us and a chance for fans to win tickets to the Jets vs Vikings this weekend, these are the betting tips for some of the top matchups.

Las Vegas Raiders at Denver Broncos

A battle in the AFC West to attempt to claw closer to the division-leading Chiefs, the Raiders against the Broncos looks to be a game where the better defence wins the day.

As it happens, the Denver Broncos boast one of the best defences in the NFL. Only the Los Angeles Chargers and Pittsburgh Steelers have conceded fewer points so far.

In terms of yards per play, the Broncos rank as the best in the league, and the offence – with rookie Bo Nix at the helm – is starting to find its rhythm.

The Las Vegas Raiders will rock up with Gardner Minshew calling the shots and star wide receiver Davante Adams both recovering from a hamstring injury and having publically announced his desire to be traded.

In the backfield, the Raiders have also struggled greatly, with neither Zamir White nor Alexander Mattison having been particularly effective, amounting to the team having the fifth-fewest yards per carry.

Denver look to be moving in the right direction, and this should be their first home win of the season, so the NFL Week 5 tip here goes to the Broncos taking the game at -3.5 on the point spread.

New York Giants at Seattle Seahawks

Having made their way past the Broncos, the New England Patriots in overtime, and then the Miami Dolphins, the Seattle Seahawks got their wings clipped by the Detroit Lions in Week 4.

The game to watch of last week saw Seattle put up a season-high in points to try to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with a true Super Bowl contender, but ended up losing 42-29. Still, there were bright spots for the Seahawks.

Now, they have a clear path to bouncing back with a home game against the New York Giants. Still undefeated at home and evidently capable of beating lesser teams, Seattle will expect to remain atop the NFC West after Week 5.

Looking to pull off an upset will be the travelling Giants, who collected their sole win of the season away to the Cleveland Browns. Last week, they lost 20-15 to the Cowboys. It looks close, but the Giants only scored field goals.

Now, the Giants are the fourth-lowest scoring team in the NFL, with 60 points through four games and only six touchdowns scored so far.

The offence already flows through rookie receiver Malik Nabers, who has three of those touchdowns, but there’s a chance that he’ll miss out on this game due to the concussion sustained in the loss to the Cowboys.

Even if Nabers can suit up, this looks to be a mismatch that the Seahawks will be keen and competent enough to capitalise on, so the pick goes to Seattle at -6.5 on the spread.

Green Bay Packers at Los Angeles Rams

Jordan Love returned to action for the Green Bay Packers last week, facing a menacing Minnesota Vikings outfit keen on ousting any momentum gained from the young quarterback getting back on the field.

To the final minute of the first half, the Packers missed two field goals and Love threw two interceptions, while the Vikings amassed a 28-0 lead. Just before the close, Love found Jayden Reed to get on the score sheet.

The third quarter was a stalemate. Then, Love turned up the heat in the fourth, scoring a touchdown and converting a fumble into another, but it slipped away with an interception and another fumble to eventually end 31-29 to the Vikings.

Now, the Packers face a far less potent Los Angeles Rams. The team has scored 75 points (good for the bottom ten in the NFL) and has allowed 115 points against, losing to the Bears, Cardinals, and Lions.

After edging past the Rams 27-24 in Week 3, the Rams buckled to the Bears 24-18 last time out. The Rams were punished for their setbacks, which included Matthew Stafford being sacked and fumbling on their own 16-yard line.

In the end, it was a frustrating loss punctuated by settling for field goals. It was one where the Rams could have come away with the win – even without Cooper Kupp, Puka Nacua, and a big chunk of their starting offensive line.

The Rams allow a 72.6 pass completion percentage, a massive 9.1 yards per attempt, have given up eight touchdowns through the air, and only have one interception to date.

Packers receivers, on the other hand, average 13.2 yards per reception. So, the Week 5 picks for this NFL game go to Reed and Love beating their overs for receiving and passing yards, respectively.
