• Jerod Mayo has gone from New England Patriots player to head coach in 16 years.

  • At the time of his appointment, Mayo became the youngest active head coach in the NFL.

  • With the Pats, Mayo won Super Bowl XLIX and was named to the Pro Bowl twice.

Bill Belichick casts a huge shadow over Gillette Stadium, and the first man up to try to rebuild the New England Patriots is the mighty frame of former linebacker Jerod Mayo.

Just 37-years-old, Mayo impressed as the team’s inside linebackers coach for four seasons and has now been promoted to the top job.

With a stellar playing career and now a head coaching role in the NFL, many will be putting the Pats down as sneaky winners in the Week 1 online betting lines, and some will be wondering what Mayo’s net worth is now.

Playing Career

Before entering the NFL coaching scene, Jerod Mayo was a highly-rated linebacker. In fact, he was selected tenth overall in the 2008 NFL Draft, with Bill Belichick putting a lot of faith in him early.

Mayo paid that off, and then some. In 2008, he was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and would be particularly impressive during the 2010 season.

To end the 2014 season, he and the New England Patriots won the Super Bowl, but a serious injury during the campaign would keep Mayo off of the field for much of the season and the big game.

Still, he remained on the sidelines, with his rapport with the other players and his motivational skills during the 2014 season being cited as early signs of his future role as a head coach.

He used his playing experience to entrench himself in Belichick’s coaching setup, and now, having trained under arguably the greatest NFL head coach of all time, he’ll be expected to deliver improvements relatively quickly.

As you’d assume from a rebuilding team in the same division as the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills, the Pats aren’t immediate favourites in the NFL betting. However, some surprise results may be on the cards.

How Much is Jerod Mayo Worth?

Jerod Mayo’s net worth is currently said to be in the region of $16 million by outlets that make these estimations. Taking into account his career earnings alone, however, that net worth might need a bump.

The salaries of Mayo’s contracts with the Patriots would have earned him around $67.65 million, but he did suffer a fair few injuries. He was at least guaranteed $37.1 million per his contracts

Then, position coaches in the NFL are reportedly earning at least $400,000 per season – which Mayo was for four seasons – and the low end for head coach pay is still around $3.5 million.

So, while the net worth figure for Mayo isn’t anywhere near as high as someone like Jerry Jones, it’s likely higher than $16 million – perhaps closer to the $25 million mark.

Career Accolades

In the NFL, Mayo put up 802 tackles, eight forced fumbles, three interceptions, and 11 sacks across 103 regular season games from 2008 to 2015.

In the postseason, he unfortunately didn’t get much of a look in. Having missed the 2013 and 2014 playoffs with injury, Mayo could only put up eight postseason games. Even so, he put up 57 tackles and forced two fumbles.

He won Super Bowl XLIX as a part of the Pats and also collected several individual accolades. He was named the Defensive Rookie of the Year and picked for the Pro Bowl twice.

In 2010, a particularly imperious season for the linebacker, Mayo stood as the NFL’s solo and combined tackles leader.

Still only 38-years-old, when Mayo was promoted by the Patriots to the head coach role, he became the youngest head coach in the NFL. That was until the Seahawks named their new head coach.

Undoubtedly, if Mayo proves to be successful in his new role, his net worth will increase substantially.
