Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo was a long-term target for Manchester United and appeared close to an Old Trafford transfer when Erik ten Hag was hired.

Liverpool swept in and took the Dutch international in 2023, however, shortly after he had starred for the Netherlands at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

With a versatile skillset, Gakpo has at times looked like a jack-of-all-trades. With no clear position and rarely favoured by Jurgen Klopp, Gakpo has flourished since Arne Slot took over at Anfield.

While a long way from being a Premier League betting favourite for the Golden Boot, the Dutchman has had a key role to play in Liverpool’s stellar 2024/25 campaign.

Breaking through with PSV Eindhoven, Gakpo has collected numerous team and individual honours. Set to feature in football betting markets for years to come, let’s learn a bit more about the Liverpool star.

How Much Is Cody Gakpo Worth?

Cody Gakpo’s net worth is estimated to be in the £7 million range, according to various sources. Still early in his professional career, Gakpo has a long time to add to his net worth through his salary, investments, and endorsements.

Gakpo has worn Puma boots throughout his career. He wore a special edition of the Puma Ultra 5 boots for the 2022 World Cup, which were not available to purchase.

This partnership is bound to have bolstered his net worth.

Salary

Cody Gakpo’s weekly salary is £120,000, per Spotrac. This is tied for the 82nd-biggest wage in the Premier League with Alexander Isak, Aaron Ramsdale, Alphonse Areola, Sandro Tonali, and several others.

Gakpo has the same salary as Liverpool teammate Dominik Szoboszlai. The Hungarian international joined the Merseyside giants six months after Gakpo, with the pair set to star alongside one another for the rest of the 2020s.

Having signed a five-and-a-half-year deal with Liverpool at the start of 2023, Gakpo’s contract runs until the end of the 2027/28 season. He will celebrate his 29th birthday on 7th May 2028.

Landlord

In April 2204, Dutch publication De Limburger reported of widespread complaints from tenants at Cody Gakpo’s properties in the south of the Netherlands.

Gakpo invested a significant portion of his early-career earnings in a property portfolio in his home country. He has faced major criticism over his role as a landlord.

With properties in Rotterdam, Dordrecht, Roermond, Weert, and Geleen listed at above the average rent despite vermin infestation, substandard repairs, and structural issues, tenants have publicly complained about the situation they have been left in.

One resident said, “A rat fell down through there into my living room. It scared me to death. I saw it running. It was a rat with a long tail. It was definitely not a mouse.”

Another added, “You see the gnaw marks on my sofa here? I don’t actually dare to be here.”

Gakpo’s representatives refused to comment when this story broke. Stefan Sals, who collects rent and deals with issues at the properties, said, "There was nuisance from mice. We had those exterminated. The maintenance condition of the property is good.”

‘Neglectful’ and ‘not fit for human habitation’ have been used to describe Gakpo and his property portfolio.

Transfer

Liverpool gazumped Manchester United to sign Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven in December 2022. The transfer was completed when the January transfer window opened a few days later.

According to BBC Sport, Liverpool paid £35.4 million – potentially rising to £44.3 million – for Gakpo’s service. It’s the either the largest or second-largest fee ever received by PSV depending on the sum Napoli paid for Hirving Lozano.

Manchester United had sustained interest in Gakpo before the 2022/23 season, but were not able to get a deal over the line.

In a Sky Sports interview in March 2024, Gakpo spoke about the saga.

He said, "I think it was the summer before that I was in contact with the club [Manchester United] and spoke to the manager as well, obviously he's Dutch. But, at the end it didn't go through and that's just it. And in the winter Liverpool came. [It was the] Best decision for me."

At the time of the signing, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said, “The work that has gone into this has been really impressive and in the end we have managed to sign a player who we have known about for quite some time and who we believe will have a really bright future with us.

“There is a lot to like about Cody. He is still only 23 years old but he already has a lot of experience. He was the captain of PSV, he was the player of the year in Holland last season and, as a lot of people have just seen, he also had a great World Cup with his national team.

“So, it is clear that he is already a really, really good player but his age also means he also has the potential to become even better.

“Offensively, he is very versatile and on top of this we know he is a smart footballer and also a smart person, so we are really excited to be able to work with him.”

Position

Most comfortable on the left flank, Cody Gakpo’s versatility has been a curse at times.

Adept as a number 10, in a deeper midfield role, or leading the line, Jurgen Klopp shifted Gakpo between positions, making it difficult for him to establish himself.

The Dutch international has been honest about his preferred role on the left. It allows him to cut inside onto his right foot and has been where he’s played his best football for PSV Eindhoven and the Netherlands.

Standing at 6’4 and with good close control, Gakpo is a prime candidate to move into a central midfield role as he ages. His future position at Liverpool will likely be dictated by the club’s recruitment.

Arne Slot Impact

Cody Gakpo was used in a number of positions by Jurgen Klopp. He never really settled into a role, despite a run of games playing as a number eight in Klopp’s trademark 4-3-3.

It’s clear Gakpo is enjoying his football more under Arne Slot, having been able to lock down regular minutes on the left wing.

Speaking on Men in Blazers, Gakpo said, “Before I came to Liverpool I also played as a left winger. Then I came here and I started to play more as a central striker.

“Because he said there’s a lot of competition here, so you just have to show yourself. But he said, ‘that is going to be your position’.

“It felt a little bit, for me, like the old me, like what I did at PSV as well. I feel really good in this position. I try to show my best to everybody, what I’m capable of.

“I think I come into more one-v-ones now with my face towards the opponent, where I can really go inside and give a cross, shoot or go outside and give a cross – which is more my game, I would say, and where I think I can be really dangerous and help the team the most.

“At the Euros, I played as a left winger again. Then this season the new manager came in, I had a talk with him and he said, ‘you have to focus on the left winger position…this is your position when you come on or when you start’.”
