New Zealand striker Chris Wood has been a long-time Premier League striker. First featuring in Premier League odds back in 2008-09, Wood spent the next few years in the Championship and League One on various loans.

There was a brief return to the topflight in 2014-15 before heading back to the Championship with Ipswich and then Leeds.

Since 2017-18, Wood has been a fixture in the Premier League across spells with Burnley, Newcastle, and Nottingham Forest.

Never a football betting favourite for the Golden Boot, Wood has been a consistent, industrious striker throughout his career.

It is only into his thirties that he has become a more regular goal scorer in the Premier League.

How Much Is Chris Wood Worth?

Chris Wood’s net worth is thought to be in the £5 million range. Exact figures for Wood’s net worth are hard to come by due to limited reporting on his financial circumstances.

He might not be among the greatest strikers in Premier League history, but Wood has been handsomely compensated throughout his career.

He has spent most of his prime in the Premier League, amassing millions in salary along the way.

There isn’t a catalogue of Chris Wood endorsements like some of his Premier League peers.

Wood will have been paid substantial sums by boot manufacturers, though, and he’s been seen in several different brands over the years.

Salary

Chris Wood’s salary at Nottingham Forest is £80,000 per week. There are 156 Premier League players earning more than Wood per week in 2024-25.

Spotrac claims Wood is earning the same amount as Nottingham Forest teammate Callum Hudson-Odoi, Chelsea defender Axel Disasi, and several other players.

There are 42 forwards earning more than Wood per week, including Jack Harrison and Eddie Nketiah.

James Ward-Prowse and Nikola Milenkovic are the only Forest players with higher salaries than Wood.

His contract is due to expire at the end of 2024-25 after signing a two-year deal when he joined Forest permanently in June 2023.

Nottingham Forest

Chris Wood initially joined Nottingham Forest on loan in the 2023 January transfer window. Wood had fallen out of favour at Newcastle in the first half of the 2022-23 season.

There was an obligation to buy if Wood met certain conditions. Despite missing the final month or so of the season through a thigh injury, Wood signed permanently for Forest in June 2023 for a reported fee of £15 million.

After joining Forest, Wood said, "It's a great feeling and I am very thankful to be here. Nottingham Forest is a massive club which I have come up against a number of times, but it's nice now to be able to pull on the red shirt and fight for the club.

"You can see the transition over the past 18 months and it's progressing in the right way. It's a project that's going in the right direction.

"It's a club looking up rather than anything else, it's going to take a lot of hard work, but it's a squad that's pulling together.

"I've been in this league a long time, so hopefully I'll bring a lot of experience to try and help the younger lads out and bring everybody together."

Wood only scored one goal in his first half-season with Forest. It was an important one, however, as it helped his new team secure a draw against Manchester City.

His second season was the joint-most productive of his Premier League career with 14 goals to his name. It was only the third time in his career he scored more than 13 goals in a league campaign.

Wood was also named Premier League Player of the Month in October 2024 amid an excellent start to the campaign under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Premier League Goals

Chris Wood has scored 79 Premier League goals in 242 appearances. The 2024-25 season is the sixth time Wood has scored double-digit goals in a Premier League campaign.

He has scored at least 10 Premier League goals in every season he’s recorded 26 or more appearances. Wood is the top Premier League goal scorer for Burnley and Nottingham Forest.

Transfer

Chris Wood is no stranger to relocating. He started his career in his home country of New Zealand with Cambridge, Hamilton Wanderers, and Waikato before joining West Bromwich Albion in 2009.

During his time under contract with the Baggies, Wood had loans with Barnsley, Brighton, Birmingham, Bristol City, Millwall and Leicester.

In January 2013, the latter two teams both agreed fees with West Brom for Wood. He opted to join Leicester.

With his role at Leicester diminishing after their promotion in 2014, Wood was loaned out to Ipswich in the January transfer window. In July 2015, the Kiwi signed with Leeds United for around £3 million.

He spent three seasons with Leeds before returning to the Premier League with Burnley. Over four-and-a-half years as a Claret, Wood scored 53 goals.

Bankrolled by new ownership and desperate to avoid the drop, Newcastle triggered Wood’s release clause for roughly £25 million in January 2022.

Despite leaving the club, Wood has retained a good relationship with Newcastle manager Eddie Howe.

Speaking to Forest’s YouTube channel in November 2024, Wood said, "It was a time in my career where I wanted to just get back playing.

"I had a great relationship with the Newcastle supporters, Eddie Howe and the team there, but I was looking like being the third-choice. At that stage of my career, I didn't really want to be third-choice. I wanted to play and Forest gave me the opportunity.

"I was very lucky that Eddie Howe was understanding of that and appreciated my side of wanting to play even though he didn't want to let me go at the time because it might have left him a bit short.

"He was really good for me in the sense of saying, 'I want you to continue your career and do well.'"

Market Value

Chris Wood has a market value of €7m, according to transfermarkt.

Signed by Newcastle for £25 million, Wood is the most expensive footballer ever from Oceania. Wood’s career transfer fees add up to over £50 million.
