Liverpool left-back Andrew Robertson has been one of the core pieces of the Reds’ most successful period of the 21st century.

A marauding full-back with an irrepressible competitive nature, Robertson was a shrewd signing from Hull in 2017. Since then, the Scot has become the best non-Ashley Cole left-back in Premier League history.

His role on the left-hand side of the defence has been vital to Liverpool’s balance throughout the Jurgen Klopp era and into Arne Slot’s tenure.

There are plenty of footballers with a higher net worth than Robertson, but he’s still in an incredibly comfortable financial position as he nears the twilight years of his playing career.

Much of Robertson’s cash will have been built up through his Liverpool salary and bonuses. He has also done several endorsements over the years, including becoming the representative for luxury menswear brand Royle Eleven. 

He might not be the most marketable player in the Liverpool squad, but Robertson has still been able to accumulate plenty of income through brand deals. His impact on the pitch has contributed to revenue off it. 

Injury History

Injuries were barely a problem for Andrew Robertson earlier in his career. Like so many players, however, physical issues have become increasingly frequent as he neared and passed 30 years of age.

He missed seven games in 2022-23 through a knee injury and was sidelined for 26 total matches in 2023-24. Ankle, shoulder, hip, and knee problems have all seen Robertson miss time in the last few years.

The 2023-24 season was by far his worst from an injury perspective, and Liverpool will be hoping that this isn’t a sign of things to come.

Perhaps most significantly, Robertson earns £80,000 less than his full-back partner Trent Alexander-Arnold. There are 10 players in the Liverpool squad earning more than Robertson. 

Given the salaries of other top full backs like Reece James, Kyle Walker, and Ben Chilwell, Robertson has been severely underpaid throughout his peak years.

Playing in Scotland and then for Hull before joining Liverpool, he was at a lower starting point, but one wonders if Robertson could have earned more elsewhere. 

Even if he could have done, it wasn’t enough to tempt him to leave Liverpool. The Scotland international recommitted to the club in 2021, signing an extension until the end of 2025-26.

At the time, Robertson said, "Obviously when the negotiations started and it looked as if my future was going to be here longer term than what it was, then I think it's no secret that I'm happy at this club.

Wife

Andy Robertson is married to Rachel Roberts. The couple tied the knot in 2022 and have two children together.

Roberts, a fluent speaker of Spanish and Portuguese, graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2016 and owns a sportwear brand called Orosport.

Unlike many footballers, Robertson opts to keep his private life away from the public eye. He has rarely posted any images of his family on social media.

Transfer To Anfield

Liverpool acquired Andy Robertson from Hull City for a fee of £10 million in the 2017 summer transfer window. The Reds also signed Mohamed Salah, Dominic Solanke, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain that summer.

Speaking to the Liverpool website after the transfer was confirmed, Robertson said, "It feels a wee bit surreal just now. Obviously I'm delighted. There's been a lot of speculation over the last couple of weeks but I'm glad that the deal's finally been done and I'm a Liverpool player.

"My family are proud of what I've achieved so far and they're all over the moon with the move, as well as me of course. We're all just looking forward to being part of the Liverpool family now.

"There's not many, if any, more special clubs than Liverpool. When you grow up as a kid you dream of playing with big clubs such as Liverpool and to make that a reality is a dream come true for me.

"I just want to prove to people that I can do it at this level, and hopefully I manage to do that this season and go on to do good things for this club."

The transfer represented a remarkable career trajectory for Robertson, who had been playing in the Scottish Third Division three years earlier.

Jurgen Klopp acknowledged that unusual path to Anfield. The German said, "For Andrew, this is another big step on what has been a quite incredible personal journey in a very short space of time.

"I know our environment will benefit him and help him push himself even more than he has already. This is a player who does not limit his ambition."
