Football Predictions Tuesday

Bayern Munich v Real Madrid

Two giants of European football come head-to-head in Munich on Tuesday night, as Bayern Munich welcome Real Madrid to the Allianz Arena in the UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg.

It’s been a tough old season for Bayern Munich under Thomas Tuchel, from being knocked out of the German Cup by minnows Saarbrucken to seeing Bayer Leverkusen dominating the Bundesliga and claiming the title. I’m sure all that might be forgiven by the Bayern Munich faithful if their side can claim their seventh Champions League trophy and their first since 2020. The Bavarian advanced into the semi-final stage here after seeing off Premier League title challengers Arsenal over two legs, you feel Los Blancos are a step up here but they’ll be hoping to take some sort of result over to Madrid in the return leg.

Head coach Thomas Tuchel knows the importance of the fans; “"It's always better to play in front of your own fans. With every tackle and every good action, you get the support and it lifts you and gives you a second wind. Now it's the semi-finals and everyone needs to step up – we need to step up and the supporters need to step up again."

It’s only a matter of time before Real Madrid claim the La Liga title for the thirty-sixth time, another victory on the road on Friday evening against Real Sociedad made it twenty-six wins from their thirty-three league games, having lost just once. Los Blancos are looking to extend their record in this competition, they’ll be looking to make it fifteen competition victories, more than any other side.

They booked their Champions League semi-final place after a victory over current holders Manchester City on penalties, a game that many thought City would win after their 3-3 draw in the first leg, but Los Blancos proved many wrong once again. Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti knows how important this competition is; “"We showed the attitude and commitment demanded by this jersey [in the quarter-finals against Manchester City]. This is a very special competition for us and we always deliver something that people are not expecting us to produce. Everyone was writing us off but we're still here."

It’s likely were in for another UCL classic here, the last four competitive games between these two have produced at least three goals, with all four games seeing both teams hit the back of the net.

Football Predictions Wednesday

Borussia Dortmund v Paris Saint-Germain

What an atmosphere it’s going to be at the Signal Iduna Park on Wednesday evening when Borussia Dortmund welcome Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semi-final first leg.

Borussia Dortmund secured their place in the semi-final of this competition with an impressive victory over Atletico Madrid in the second leg, since then they’ve haven’t won in their last two outings, most recently a 4-1 drubbing away to Red Bull Leipzig. However, they’ll make sure they’re ready for this fixture as The Prussians look to claim their second Champions League trophy, with the first coming in 1997.

These two sides met in the group stage earlier in the campaign, PSG were victorious in Paris whilst the game played in Dortmund ended in a 1-1 draw. Since then, Dortmund coach Edin Terzic believes his side have improved; "Now we face Paris. Our first game against them wasn't good. In the second game, we adjusted to them better and were closer to victory. I think we're a better team today than we were against them in the group stage."

Paris Saint-Germain hoped to have claimed the Ligue 1 title in front of their own fans on Saturday evening, three points were needed to do that but they could only manage 1 point in a 3-3 thriller against Le Havre. However, Monaco lost away to Lyon on Sunday evening which handed the Parisians their twelfth title, a massive boost heading into this huge fixture.

In more recent times, PSG are expected to win Ligue 1 without any issues but this is the trophy their fans demand, they’ve never won the competition but they’ll feel this could be the year. After losing the first leg in Paris against Barcelona, their fans maybe thought it was all over but a dominant 4-1 victory in the return leg has set up this intriguing clash. PSG coach Luis Enrique knows how important this is; "The best feeling when you are a player or a coach is seeing that your work makes people happy. There's nothing better than that. You can't buy that feeling. The feeling of getting something special for the club is great. Now we need to cope with the semi-final and try to get ourselves to the final."

I think we’ll see another thriller here but I also fancy PSG to take an advantage back to Paris for the return leg, recent results for Borussia Dortmund will be a concern.

Football Predictions Thursday

Chelsea v Tottenham Hotspur

Another London derby here as Chelsea welcome Tottenham to Stamford Bridge on Thursday evening in the Premier League.

Chelsea suffered more frustration on Saturday evening away at Aston Villa, having found themselves 2-0 down at the break, the Blues show came out fighting in the second half and managed to find two goals of their own but the real frustration for Mauricio Pochettino came in the 95th minute, Disasi thought he had completed the comeback but VAR ruled out the goal for an alleged shove in the build-up, Chelsea had to settle for a point with Pochettino saying that VAR has damaged the game, something that many people now agree with.

After two-weeks without a game for Tottenham Hotspur, they played hosts in the North London derby on Sunday with the hopes of not only keeping their top four fight alive but ending those title dreams of their bitter rivals. The hope for Spurs and their supporters didn’t last long, they went into the break 3-0 down, a late fight back did see them put some pressure on Arsenal with two goals but the Gunners held out and Spurs now sit seven points behind Aston Villa in fifth, albeit with two games in hand.

These are two sides that have produced plenty of goals in their recent games, this season, 63% of Chelsea’s home games have seen three of more goals, whilst the same can be said for 75% of Tottenham’s away games, I think we’re in for another classic between these two rivals.

AS Roma v Bayer Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen will travel to the Stadio Olimpico to face AS Roma in the Europa League semi-final first leg on Thursday evening.

Roma looked well on their way to secure a Champions League spot for next season by finishing in the top five in Serie A. However, results of late have invited pressure from Atalanta who are now just two points behind with a game in hand. The Giallorossi find themselves in a similar position to last season and they know exactly how it feels, narrowly missing out on a UCL spot in both Serie A and losing in the Europa League final last season, it’ll definitely be something that the players will think about. This is actually a rematch of last seasons semi-final, Roma advanced after a 1-0 victory over the 180 minutes.

Where do you start with this incredible Bayer Leverkusen side? Just when you think their unbeaten run is coming to an end, they never cease to amaze you. Xabi Alonso’s side found themselves on the brink of their first defeat of the season against Stuttgart on Saturday before another super late equaliser, this time from Robert Andrich, extended their unbeaten run to 46 games, remarkable. Leverkusen were defeated in this fixture last season but this is a different side and they’ll be looking to continue this run.

The worry for Bayer Leverkusen, they’ve managed just one clean sheet in their last ten away games in the knockout stages of a UEFA competition, Roma will be tough opposition, especially at home and that set’s up an intriguing clash.

Marseille v Atalanta

The Stade Velodrome will be the venue for this Europa League semi-final clash between Marseille and Atalanta on Thursday evening.

Marseille kept their hopes alive of securing a European place for next season with a 2-1 victory over top six rivals Lens, the win moves the Phocaeans just two points behind now with three games left to play. The Olympians overturned a 2-1 deficit against Benfica to reach the last four, they’ll be hoping this fixture will be less dramatic over the two legs, although they did score all four of their penalties in the shootout.

Atalanta are going under the radar a little this season but for me, they’ve been absolutely brilliant. Still in contention of finishing in the top five in Serie A, secured themselves a place in the Coppa Italia final and here they are fighting for a Europa League final spot having seen off competition favourites Liverpool in the previous round.

These two sides haven’t met before, so we cannot compare any head-to-head data but one thing we know is that both teams play their part in entertaining clashes, I think we’ll get another one here.

Aston Villa v Olympiacos Piraeus

A noisy Villa Park awaits on Thursday night as Aston Villa take on Olympiacos Piraeus in the Europa Conference League semi-final first leg.

Aston Villa will take part in their first major European semi-final in 42 years on Thursday and will be hoping to claim their spot in the Europa Conference League final in Athens. The Villans have been solid in all six of their home games in this competition, there’s something special about Villa Park under the lights and they’ve taken victory in all six of those games. However, Villa will be a little concerned about squandering a two-goal lead here to Chelsea on Saturday night, after a brilliant first half performance they offered very little in the second half, the Villa faithful will be hoping they can see this game out.

Olympiacos will be hoping their boss Jose Luis Mendilibar can help them get this trophy won given he led Sevilla to the Europa League trophy last season. They dropped out of the Europa League this season and into this competition, they’ve actually already visited England this season with a trip to London to face West Ham, they got beat 1-0, they’ll be hoping to put in a better performance here and have something to take back to Greece for the second leg.

I think Aston Villa will really fancy their chances here, they’ll be looking to make a statement but also give themselves a comfortable lead ahead of the second leg, we all know how passionate and loud those away games are in Greece, home win.

Fiorentina v Club Brugge

Belgian side Club Brugge will travel to Florence on Thursday evening to take on Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League semi-final first leg.

Finalists last season, Fiorentina will be hoping to get some sort of revenge and go the whole way this time around, after being knocked out of the Coppa Italia last week, this is the Viola’s last chance of silverware this season, it would be their first major trophy since 2001. It’s looking like a tough ask for Fiorentina to finish in the top seven, it’s possible but time is running out, so if they want to guarantee European football for their fans next season, it’s likely they’ll be relying on a victory in this competition.

Club Brugge are unbeaten in their last eight games, they’ve actually won seven of those eight including two victories over Greek side PAOK to secure their place in this semi-final tie. That run of form has also seen the Blue-Black climb to the top of the league, joint with Anderlecht, they’ll be looking for a victory here and put themselves on their way to their first ever major European trophy.

Another game which looks great on paper for goals, eight of Club Brugge’s last ten games across all competitions have produced three or more goals, whilst there has been eleven goals scored in Fiorentina’s last two outings.

Football Predictions Friday

Luton Town v Everton

Everton travel to Kenilworth Road on Friday night to take on Luton Town in the Premier League.

Luton Town enter this fixture still within the bottom three in the Premier League, although only by one point. The team above them, Nottingham Forest, have only taken one point from their last four games but the Hatters haven’t been able to capitalise and they themselves have lost their last three games, they’ve now also gained pressure from Burnley below them, they seem to have come out of nowhere to put themselves just two points from safety, we’re in for a turbulent last three games down at the bottom.

Everton secured their Premier League safety on Saturday night with a 1-0 victory over Brentford, after being deducted eight points this season, there’s been real uncertainty regarding their future in the English top-flight, but that’s all been put to bed for another season at least, following their run of four victories in five games.

Despite being towards the bottom, Luton Town have been brilliant to watch this season as a neutral, they’ve produced some really high scoring games and they’ve seen both teams hit the back of the net in 82% of their games on home turf in the league. I think we’ll see the same again here but I’m going to edge towards Luton Town to drag themselves out of the bottom three.
